Dark Souls Comic: Issue 2 Cover

Client: Bandai Namco, Titan Books, Komikaki Studio


This was actually a test cover for the official Dark Souls comic that's due to be released on April 6th, which is next Thursday. It's also the first piece I rendered for this job.

I was frankly quite surprised to find out that the editor had decided to use this artwork for Issue 2's cover. At this point we were still not sure about the art direction (monochromatic like Dark Souls 3, or fresh colours typical of mainstream western comics?). I tried to push for an oil paint look with lots of details and textures, but ended up butchering Alan Quah's pencil art here, which is terrible because his work is brilliant. orz

There's actually an alternate version with a reddish apocalyptic background. I'm also fonder of that version as it seems to fit the Dark Souls vibe more, so hopefully I will get permission to post that later.
