Behind Civilisation's Mask

Project work for my Design 2 Lecture, based on the quote "I shut my eyes in order to see" by Paul Gauguin. My first attempt using acrylic and canvas! Not very satisfactory, didn't really like the way the colours turned out. It took really long to upload this, sigh...

Symbols in the painting:

Green arrow piercing heart: Back-biting of others because of envy. (Envy, the Green-Eyed Monster).

Blue hands with circuit board patterns: Technology, the way it pampers, supports yet imprisons and weakens us.

White stairs: Good-intentioned dreams that we have that are often unfulfilled due to personal goals and wants.

Purple mushroom-like people with gaping mouths: The demands and influence of others on us, whether it be advertisements, our boss or teachers, parents, peer pressure etc.

Chains: Responsibilities in life, some of which are actually redundant.

The entire poster is actually the upper-left part of a cracked mask: the mask of "civilised" humans.
